Warmth and safety for all: arrangement of shelters in Lyubotyn

1. How was it?

The Lyubotyn community received almost fifteen thousand migrants with its own population of twenty-four thousand. The city authorities have prepared shelters in four anchor schools. There was a critical lack of seating. Children and the elderly had to stand or sit just on the floor during the long siren. The initiative group “Lyubotyn Community Together” joined forces with the NGO “Agency of Local Initiatives” to solve the problem.

At first, activists planned to ask for desks. Over time, they realized the urgent need for comfortable storage. The team applied for funding and received support.

2. Impressive results

The team successfully purchased one hundred and five large frameless soft chairs. New furniture has been placed in four schools in different neighborhoods of the city. The initiative reached three hundred seventy-five direct beneficiaries. Two hundred families received better conditions to stay safe. About six hundred people felt the indirect benefit of the innovation.

A local entrepreneur from Lyubotyn became a manufacturer of poufs. The participants of the initiative group manually unloaded and transported furniture around the schools on their own cars.

3. Challenges and Achievements

The main challenge was the lack of previous experience with grants. Activists were afraid of bureaucratic procedures and complicated financial documents. The NGO took over all the paperwork and official procedures. Cooperation with a local manufacturer has avoided logistical problems. Writing reports turned out to be the most difficult stage for beginners.

Teamwork and a clear distribution of responsibilities helped to successfully complete all planned actions.

4. Impact on the community

Previously, the descent into the dark basement caused tears and nervousness in children. Now the little one has comfortable colored seats and feels more at peace. Teachers were able to organize the space normally and continue their work. Parents became less concerned about the safety of children during lessons.

Elderly residents of neighborhoods are now more willing to go to shelters instead of staying at home dangerously. The most valuable result was a sense of care among the population. People saw real action.

5. What did the project leave?

The new poufs have a durable fabric and removable covers for washing. In the future, schools will be able to use them for circles and recreation areas, even in peacetime. The initiative group gained invaluable experience and believed in its own strength. Ordinary moms, dads and teachers realized the ability to independently change the life of their city for the better. The implemented idea proved the effectiveness of cooperation between local authorities, businesses and active citizens.

The community was inspired for new achievements and further development.

6. Who creates change

The project implementsLocal Initiatives Agencyon the initiative of a community group: parents, teachers and volunteers who already work daily in shelters, know the needs of children and are ready to ensure that the equipped areas are really used. The Ministries are implemented within the project “Strengthening the Resilience of Communities through the Support of Communities Initiatives” approach with the financial support of the international humanitarian organization HEKS/EPER (Switzerland) in coordination withAlliance for Public Health
